EARTH CARE

It has always been clear to us that if we establish a brand, we want to consciously and sustainably build it up and, above all, give something back to our world. Our responsibility towards the environment is personally extremely important to us and much more than just a trend. For this reason, the topic of sustainability runs through our corporate processes - from product materials to the supply chain and our corporate culture.

However, it is at least as important for us to be able to give something back to our world, because: Sharing is caring. For this reason, we initially donate 1% of our annual turnover to aid organisations. It is important for us to support one regional Australian charity organisation and one project that is committed to nature, environmental and climate protection. Our goal is to support German / regional as well as Balinese projects over time, according to the motto: Give & Give.

Hope in a Suitcase

"Our mission is to provide something for children in foster care, that they can call "their own" and share with them, That they are looked after by the community."

- Hope In A Suitcase

Through friends in Australia, more precisely in Newcastle in NSW, Walkabout became aware of this great organisation.

Hope In A Suitcase Australia is a non-profit organisation founded by Rachael Clancy and run with many volunteers who are incredibly passionate about showing every child in the care system that they are loved and valued by their community.

The organisation aims to achieve this by giving them their own suitcase, which provides them with a safe place to pack their belongings and take them with them wherever their journey may take them.

The suitcases are filled with essential items such as toiletries (hygiene items for older girls), underwear, pyjamas and a change of clothes. In addition, something to cuddle for younger children, a book to read, a diary or colouring books and pencils are put inside to encourage creativity and thus distract themselves from their turbulence.

Climate and the ocean are very closely linked in many ways. The ocean plays an essential role in our climate system through the exchange of water, carbon and energy and is largely responsible for global oxygen production: every second breath we humans take is due to the ocean. At the same time, human-induced climate change is dramatically altering the oceans. A special report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published in September 2019 illustrates the drastic effects of the changing climate on the ocean.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the oceans have absorbed more than 90 % of the additional (man-made) heat from the Earth's atmosphere since 1970 and have warmed continuously as a result. So-called marine heat waves occur more frequently and more intensively. The warming of the ocean causes water layers to mix more poorly. Therefore, many marine organisms in some water layers or regions are no longer supplied with sufficient oxygen and vital nutrients, which leads to considerable metabolic stress for them. Due to the increased uptake of CO2 (about 20-30% of man-made carbon dioxide emissions), the pH value decreases and the oceans become increasingly acidic. This can harm marine life. Especially calcifying organisms or marine animals in young life stages, i.e. eggs or larvae, are at risk.

Globally, sea levels have already risen by an average of about 15 cm over the course of the 20th century. By 2100, sea level rise is expected to reach up to 110 cm - with dramatic consequences for low-lying coastal regions, coastal metropolises and island states. Increased water temperatures cause thermal expansion of the ocean and thus lead to rapid sea level rise. The melting of huge ice sheets and glaciers exacerbates this effect.
